I believe mastery in both biological and sociological disciplines will allow me to become a physician capable of treating patients in a holistic manner.
I believe it is important to examine the patterns of health and disease from a sociological point of view, accounting for social class, race and ethnicity, gender, and even marital status. Social stressors have a large impact on health and management of illnesses. Additionally, understanding the interconnectedness of health institutions and individual physician-patient interactions is imperative in providing the best possible treatment. I also believe in the necessity of physicians who are also sociologists - those who truly understand the community in which they serve and how a changing society calls for adapting doctors. This includes understanding implementation and execution of health care policies as well as health care reform. This unique combination of degree programs led me to pursue an MD/MPH with a concentration in Behavioral and Community Health Sciences. I am specifically interested in community based health programming and serving underserved populations.

During my time volunteering at a community garden, I took ethnographic field notes to document interactions between myself, another student, my professor, and other community volunteers. This will be used in a larger, ongoing research project to evaluate the use of the garden and its effects on the surrounding communities. Work such as this helps me to communicate with a diverse group of people and share in their experiences. Names have been changed to protect the privacy of those involved.

I explored my interest in stem cell research and regenerative medicine in this micro review article. I focus specifically on mesenchymal stem cells in cardiovascular therapy. I was drawn to Dr. Doris Taylor's work involving regenerative medicine and decellularization, prompting further research into this field.

In my final paper for a bioethics class, I explored the moral and legal implications of child euthanasia. I use the four principles of autonomy, justice, beneficence, and nonmaleficence to evaluate this. This allowed me to understand the complexity of ethical issues and helped me to see all possible angles in finding a solution.
